"Greater Los Angeles" is the designation given to the city of Los Angeles and the numerous separate smaller cities, towns and unincorporated areas located closeby (within thirty minutes driving time would be one measure of "closeby.")Greater Los Angeles contains a number of significant business centers including Downtown Los Angeles, Century City, Pasadena, Long Beach, Glendale, Burbank and Woodland Hills.
Downtown Los Angeles is the primary business district of Greater Los Angeles and the home of Chinatown, Little Tokyo, the colorful Olvera Street plaza, and the Los Angeles music center (site of Academy Awards ceremonies). Although bustling and relatively safe in the daytime, downtown empties and becomes dangerous at night.
Hollywood, on most first-time visitors' must-see list, offers its Walk of the Stars and a few other wonderful landmarks such as Mann's Chinese Theatre. Most of all, visitors are struck by the rundown and seedy quality of the entire area, which is particularly dangerous at night.
The Westside stretches from the mid-city Wilshire District (midway between downtown and the ocean) and also Beverly Hills, Westwood and O.J. Simpson's Brentwood. The Westside is a much more inviting and safer part of town. Only heavily-policed enclaves like Beverly Hills, however, have a very low incidence of muggings and similar crimes.
The neighboorhood immediately adjacent to L.A. International Airport contains a number of higher-quality business-oriented hotels. These sites can provide an excellent base for a visitor in Los Angeles for quick meetings that can be held at the hotel.
